Propositional Intentionalism and the Argument from Appearance

چکیده
The argument from appearance for the content view or intentionalism attracts a lot of attention recently. In my paper, I follow Charles Travis to argue against key premise that representational can be ‘read off’ certain way thing looks subject. My arguments are built upon Travis’s original objection and reinterpretation Rodrick Chisholm’s comparative noncomparative uses words. Byrne, Schellenberg others interpret Travis’ ‘visual looks’ as use, appeal use an alternative avoid objection. demonstrate they misunderstand both Chisholm Travis. Both semantic notions, while is metaphysical one. Although objectivism –– expressions attribute appearances ordinary objects close looks’, not exceptional Byrne interprets. end, also show Byrnean’s conception distinctive visual gestalt cannot exclude contrary contents, because shared by different kinds things. Besides, do explain why should presented ‘being instantiated’. Therefore, conclude read off subject; thus fails.

Intentionalism and the Argument from No Common Content
often motivate their approach to perceptual experience by appealing in part to the claim that in cases of veridical perception the subject is directly in contact with the perceived object. When I perceive a table, for example, there is no table-like sense-impression that stands as an intermediary between the table and me. Nor am I related to the table as I am to a deer when I see its footprint ...
متن کاملArgument from Appearance: a New Argumentation Scheme
It is shown how two defeasible forms of argument, argument from appearance and abductive reasoning, are central tools of artificial intelligence for the analysis and evaluation of legal evidence. Defeasible argumentation schemes representing these forms of argument are presented, and applied to examples of the kind of reasoning used to draw a conclusion by inference from observational data. A c...
متن کاملEternalism and Propositional Multitasking: in defence of the Operator Argument
It is widely held that propositions perform a plethora of theoretical roles. They are believed to be the semantic values of sentences in contexts, the objects of attitudes, the contents of illocutionary acts, the referents of ‘that’-clauses, and the primary bearers of truth. This assumption is often combined with the claim that propositions have their truth-values eternally. Following Kaplan’s ...
متن کاملAgainst Intentionalism
Intentionalism is the claim that the phenomenological properties of a perceptual experience supervene on its intentional properties. The paper presents a counterexample to this claim, one that concerns visual grouping phenomenology. I argue that this example is superior to superficially similar examples involving grouping phenomenology offered by Peacocke (1983), because the standard intentiona...
متن کاملIntentionalism versus The New Conventionalism
Are the properties of communicative acts grounded in the intentions with which they are performed, or in the conventions that govern them? The latest round in this debate has been sparked by Ernie Lepore and Matthew Stone (2015), who argue that much more of communication is conventional than we thought, and that the rest isn’t really communication after all, but merely the initiation of open-en...
